A Strong Start for Upper School Delate
Nightingale hosted the Manhattan Debate League opener on September 25, and the teams of Tali M. '30 and Makensie S. '30, and Katerina B. '29 and Beatrice S. '29, earned ½ qualifications for the State Championships.
This past weekend, Nightingale debaters took to the national circuit at Yale University, turning in a strong showing against competitors from across the country. First, congratulations to Grace K. '29 and Eva M. '29, who made it to the quarterfinals in the JV division. Katerina and Beatrice also won their first out-round and are now fully qualified for States. Grace was also awarded an individual trophy for ranking eighth among 156 speakers.
Team captains and debate partners Sarah B. '27 and Christina S. '27 also made it to the trophy rounds, where they tried a new strategy that had their opponents scrambling. Though Sarah and Christina didn’t advance, Sarah said she was proud they had “fought like animals,” which we’ll take to mean they defended the nest! Emmy J. '28 was our highest-ranked varsity speaker, placing in the top 10 percent of more than 300 competitors.
