Investigating the Science of Surface Tension
Students in Class IX Biology recently conducted hands-on experiments to investigate surface tension and cohesion. In one experiment, they tested how many paper clips they could float on the surface of plain water compared with soapy water, observing how soap disrupts water’s surface tension. In another, students compared how many drops of water and rubbing alcohol a penny could hold before spilling over. They discovered that water’s stronger cohesion allows it to form a dome of more than 50 drops on the penny, while rubbing alcohol spills over sooner. Through these experiments, students observed how the properties of different liquids affect their behavior.
