The Great Egg Drop
Class VIII students were recently seen dropping eggs from the balcony of Nightingale’s auditorium to the floor below, testing whether their carefully designed structures could protect their eggs from the fall.
In their Physical Science course, the egg drop project serves as an engaging introduction to students’ study of motion. By designing structures to protect an egg as it falls, students begin thinking about the principles that govern motion and the forces acting on a falling object.
At the end of the unit, students will revisit the challenge, this time adding a parachute to their designs. The second iteration will give students an opportunity to apply and reinforce their understanding of concepts including gravity, air resistance, and force.
