Drawing the Details: Students Practice Realism

Julia B. '31 takes a moment to check out Cece de O. '31's progress.

Middle School Painting and Drawing students are developing their drawing skills through a grid enlargement project, creating realistic portraits of images they have chosen themselves. By dividing an image into smaller squares and focusing on the lines and values within each section, students can approach realism in a systematic, manageable way rather than attempting to recreate an entire image at once. The project also gives students the opportunity to bring their own interests into their artwork: Cece de O. '31 is drawing musician Noah Kahan, while Julia B. '31 is creating a portrait of Dolly Parton.
