Seeing Light and Form Through Photograms

Class VI Darkroom Photography students recently completed two photogram projects exploring how light interacts with objects to create semi-abstract grayscale images. In one project, students arranged geometric shapes on light-sensitive photo paper and created contact prints to produce their inverse images. In a second, three-step project, students layered transparent patterns and their hands to create images in which the patterns fill the silhouettes of their hands. They then contact printed the images to create inverses, which will be paired as diptychs.

Through these projects, students are developing familiarity with light-sensitive materials while exploring how objects of varying densities and colors affect the passage of light to create images.
