Workshopping Macbeth
In May and early June, Class VIII English students brought Macbeth to life through a dynamic recitation workshop centered on performance, analysis, and creative interpretation. After each student selected and memorized a pivotal speech and worked to embody their character with intention and clarity, students worked with acting coach John Coyne. In preparation, students moved beyond memorization, closely analyzing language, tone, and motivation to shape performances that reflected a deep understanding of Shakespeare’s text.
The project also emphasized the role of the director, as students crafted detailed notes and annotated their speeches to map emotional shifts, pacing, and physical choices. These materials encouraged thoughtful decision-making and allowed peers to engage more deeply with one another’s interpretations. In the classroom, rehearsals became opportunities for experimentation, as students explored vocal variety, movement, and staging to refine their delivery.
The culminating performances showcased not only students’ command of the text but also their growing confidence as performers and critical thinkers. Through this immersive experience, students strengthened their ability to analyze complex literature, communicate ideas with purpose, and collaborate in a creative setting—bringing new energy and insight to a timeless work.
